Many of the messages I receive on Instagram, Facebook etc. are “I love your photos, what camera or lense do you use?”
My personal view on this is differentiated. While I think camera and lenses are only tools to help you take photos, and it all really just depends on you, your eye, your creativity… Other times you wish your camera could do this or that in order to achieve a desired effect that you can’t with your current setup.
So there is a yes and a no to the question do you really need the latest of the latest. I will also share some common challenges with even what is believed the best hard & software.
This is a comprehensive list of my gear (scroll down for more info):
- Camera: Canon 5D Mark III (Amazon)
- Studio Lens: Canon L 24-70mm EF 2.8 (Amazon)
- Portrait Lens: Tamron SP 85mm 1.8 (Amazon)
- Street / Filming Lens: Canon 35mm IS USM 2.0 (Amazon)
- Flash: Metz 50 AF-1 (Amazon)
- Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 15 Retina (Amazon)
- Graphic Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pro S (Amazon)
- Software: Adobe Photoshop CC & Adobe Lightroom CC (Amazon)
- Backpack (Camera & Laptop): Lowepro Fastpack 350 (Amazon)
For the future I’m def planning on purchasing the below:
- Fashion/Portrait: Tamron SP 70-200mm G2 (Amazon)
-> AMAZING LENSE (way cheaper than the Canon 70-200)
- Street Lens: Canon 50mm L USM 1.2 (Amazon)
-> To fill the gap of my prime lenses between 85mm & 35mm
- Wide Angle Lens: Canon 16-35 2.8 II L USM (Amazon)
Anyhow, this is what I currently use with a few comments why etc….
I used the 5D Mark II before and upgraded, which was a significant boost in quality and features. Most welcoming was the much improved focusing system. I never upgraded to the 5D Mark IV since the jump is not that significant and I also wanted my next camera to be very capable of taking videos, which is not so much the case with the Mark IV (Crop Factor, File Formats etc….) I will get to that later in detail. Or shoot me a message 🙂
Perfect All-Rounder. Though a bit heavy carrying outside at times so I usually use it to shoot Studio Shots.
PERFECT Portrait Lense. In love with the new Tamron lenses. A big step up in Quality, Focus Speed and Image Quality that equals Canon’s L lenses for a much lower budget.
This baby is my perfect street photography lens. It is also great for some video since it has IS (Image Stabilisation)
This flash is cheaper, made in Germany, and does the exact same thing as the overly priced Canon flashes 🙂 BTW the firmware can be updated.
BUT since it is outdated, I would recommend you to check out its successor the Metz 52 AF-1.
It’s a MacBook Pro 15 Retina! WOW?!?! Well just a small thought. When I switched from Windows to Mac, I hoped to have less repairs and troubles. I was proven wrong, I got the same now if not more. More than 5 Repairs, one replacement….
At this stage, I can exchange my whole unit to the very latest MacBook Pro released in 2016. But I DON’T WANT! WHY?
Here we go:
- MISSING SDCard Slot – WHY??? What is the alternative? There is NONE!!!!!
- BAD Battery life – Apple do you really think you can fool people by removing the “Time Remaining Battery Life”
- PERFORMANCE – not a huge or ANY jump from Late 2015 MacBook Pros….
These are the main 3 reasons!
What Apple did right, is pushing USB-C. I don’t care about dongles for USB or HDMI etc. I can also live with Apple taking away the best ever invention the MagSafe Adapter (Luckily there are third party cables).
BUT removing SDCard Slot just to make the MacBook Pro THINNER? Get ur **** together APPLE!
Well I guess you knew it. I use Photoshop and Lightroom. Apart from the occasional tethered shooting with Capture One Lightroom is my daily driver.
I love using a Tablet for editing my photos. It does take some time to get used to but in the end, I would never wanna go back to a Mouse and or the Trackpad. You will probably hate using the Pen in the first couple of days but believe me, It will speed up your workflow dramatically.
There is also a big downside to a Wacom tablet at least with my configuration, the MacBook Pro 15 Retina & macOS Sierra. Wacom, Adobe, and or Apple do not seem to communicate in regards to drivers and bugs. I have tested drivers on clean installations of macOS, Photoshop etc and could always replicate the same driver issues. From 10 Driver 80% are USELESS. (Even the German support acknowledged and admitted that only 2 drivers so far are “useable”)
So if you have problems like me and many others in regards to drivers, just use this driver: 6.3.20-11
Camera and photo storage
I just checked when I purchased my daily backpack, guess what – 5 Dec 2012!!!! I have my backpack almost 5 years and it is still in a fantastic condition. No tears or loose things, nor do I see any issues with the stitches etc.
It has carried at tops 4 Lenses, 1 Camera, 1 Flash, MacBook Pro 15 Retina, charger, 2 HDD, all sorts of cables and stuff. It’s super heavy at times, it has accompanied me through countless travels in Europe, Asia, Australia and the US.
This backpack is worth every CENT. (and btw its actually only around 120 USD)
I use Lacie (Porsche Design – BEAUTIFUL!!!) and Western Digital and mirror them using Chrono Sync, an amazing App to Backup, Sync etc…
P.S: This page is far from finished yet… I also will be planning on doing a bit of a blog, about my travels and photography. If you don’t want to miss any of that put in your EMAIL down below 🙂
